2022 Ford Explorer vs. 2022 Kia Telluride

Overview

Shopping for a new SUV can be fun yet confusing with so many exciting options. Perhaps you're deciding between the 2022 Ford Explorer and the 2022 Kia Telluride. If so, it's worth taking the time to compare the two closely. When you do, you'll see that the Explorer is the better buy.

Power and Performance

The Telluride features a 3.8-liter V-8 engine with 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That seems like an impressive output until the Explorer's 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine generates 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. If you want even more power, Ford offers a twin-turbo V-6, a hybrid V-6, and a regular gas-powered V-6.

Unfortunately, Kia doesn't offer any other engines for the Telluride, which also sticks you with an 8-speed automatic transmission that isn't as smooth as the Explorer's 10-speed automatic. Also, while Ford offers a four-wheel-drive system and Kia offers an all-wheel-drive system, only Ford's system includes Snow, Tow/Haul, and Eco modes.

Interior

If you're looking for an SUV that's loaded with amenities, you can't go wrong with the Explorer. It comes standard with a tri-zone climate control system and five 12-volt power outlets. The Telluride only gives you three power outlets and a dual-zone climate control system. If you equip your Explorer with the premium B&O sound system, you'll enjoy 12 state-of-the-art speakers. The Telluride's best available sound system only has 10 speakers.

When your passengers want to use their smart devices, they'll appreciate the Explorer's standard Wi-Fi hot spot, a feature not available in the Telluride. Overall, the Explorer's interior is more intuitive and user-friendly than the Kia's, thanks to a sleek driver-centric design. Compared to the Explorer, the Telluride's cabin is boxier and not as comfortable.

Safety Features

Regarding safety features, the Explorer and Telluride give you a collision mitigation system, lane-keeping assistance, and a tire pressure monitor. You can also add rain-sensing windshield wipers to both vehicles. However, the Explorer also provides an SOS post-crash alert system that automatically turns on the Explorer's emergency flashers after the airbags deploy. While the Telluride has occupant-sensing airbags, it doesn't feature a post-crash alert. The Explorer's LED daytime running lights are brighter than the Telluride's halogen daytime running lights and use less energy.

Now that you've contrasted the 2022 Ford Explorer with the 2022 Kia Telluride, it's evident that the Explorer is the superior SUV. Test drive the Explorer today and get a feel behind the wheel!
