What Emissions Tests Does My Car Need in Maryland?
An emissions test comprises of three separate tests. These tests are an on-board diagnostic test, a gas cap test, and an idle tailpipe test. Not every car requires all of these tests.
Onboard Diagnostic Test
This is performed on all vehicle models from 1996 onwards that weigh 8,500 pounds or less, and on heavy-duty vehicles from 2008 onwards that weigh 8,501 to 14,000 pounds.
Gas Cap Test
This test is for vehicle models made between 1977 and 1995 that weigh between 8,501 and 26,000 pounds.
Tailpipe Idle Test
This test is for vehicle models made between 1977 and 1995 that weigh from 8,501 pounds up to 26,000 pounds and heavy-duty vehicles from 2008 onwards that weigh between 14,001 and 26,000 pounds.
What Are the Test Requirements?
VEIP tests are required every two years unless your vehicle is exempt. The MVA will send you a reminder letter 8 weeks before your first VEIP test anniversary. You’ll need to book a VEIP test at one of the MVA’s authorized testing centers. On the day of your test, you’ll need to bring your vehicle, the VEIP reminder notice, and payment for the test.
You can also take your vehicle’s registration card. Once you pass the test, you’ll be issued a VEIP certificate, and the MVA will update its records.
What Year Cars Are Exempt from Emissions in Maryland?
Certain vehicles are exempt from VEIP testing, according to the MVA like vehicles 1995 or older under 8,500 Gross Vehicle Weight. Also, historic or antique vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles that are solely diesel or electric.
