2021 Ford Explorer vs. 2021 Kia Telluride

Overview

If you're in the market for a midsize SUV, you may be wondering how the 2021 Ford Explorer and the 2021 Kia Telluride compare. Here are a few key considerations that will help you find the right fit for your family.

Engine Options

All four trim levels available on the 2021 Kia Telluride include a 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC 24-valve V-6 engine with an output of 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an electronically controlled eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2021 Ford Explorer, on the other hand, offers three different engine options. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The Platinum and ST trims are equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that generates 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque in the Platinum or 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque in the ST. All Explorer models feature a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Performance

The 2021 Explorer edges out the Telluride in a few other performance-related specs, as well. While the Telluride gets 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, the Explorer achieves up to 27 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway if you opt for the hybrid version. EPA estimates for the base model with a gas engine are 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The 2021 Telluride is not available in a hybrid version.

It's worth noting that while both vehicles are available with all-wheel drive, their standard drivetrain differs. While the Telluride offers front-wheel drive, the Explorer provides the improved traction and acceleration that comes with rear-wheel drive. Plus, the Explorer's trailering capacity of 5,300-5,600 pounds is 300-600 pounds greater than that of the Telluride.

Standard Features

Although both vehicles offer an excellent array of standard features, the base-model Ford Explorer includes a few missing from its Kia counterpart. For instance, only the Explorer offers cross-traffic alert, dual-zone climate control, a Wi-Fi hot spot, remote trunk release, and a power liftgate.

Safety Ratings

Both vehicles earned a five-star overall crash test rating from the NHTSA. However, the Explorer earned five stars in a few categories, where the Telluride only earned four. Similarly, while the Telluride was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2021, the Explorer earned the distinction of a Top Safety Pick+ for 2021.

For safety and performance, the 2021 Ford Explorer is the clear winner. It also offers several standard features and available options that are absent from the 2021 Kia Telluride.
